Mosaics and geometric patterns

Year 4 continued their investigations about mosaics as part of their Ancient Greece topic. We used pulses and seeds today to make our patterns. The children demonstrated lots of patience, perseverance and cooperation.

Bridge building in the forest

We took our knowledge from last week’s lesson on bridges outside today to see if we could build our own in the forest. The children in Year 5 made different types of bridges and used their initiative in finding suitable materials.
We also learnt how to use a bowsaw in partners and the children demonstrated fantastic cooperation.
As we saw the grey clouds approaching we quickly made a few shelters which came in useful when it started to hail.
A great afternoon!

Forest School with Reception

I love my job!
We had such a wonderful time in the forest this afternoon even though the skies were grey. The children learnt how to tie knots then worked together to see if they could untie the big knot I put them into as a group. They were successful every time!
We had a sharing time at the end of the session with Wise Owl and the children expressed what they had enjoyed doing during the afternoon.

Calke Abbey

I had a wonderful time this morning, walking with my family at a National Trust property Calke Abbey in Derbyshire. This is somewhere I used to come in my childhood and was always a favourite. It was lovely to be there with my children and niece and nephew who had great fun exploring in the woods. We managed to squeeze in a hot chocolate and of course the essential visit to the shop to look for school resources.

Forest Management and sustainability

image

We set to work finding ways to protect the new growth in the forest today. The children were concerned that if we did not mark out these areas they may get trampled by mistake and we would loose some of our field layer.
The children moved and placed large logs around areas we wanted to save as well as using weaving skills to make small fences.

Eco Council

image

We met with the new Eco council members today to decide what projects we are going to undertake. Developing the chicken coup was a popular idea as well as cleaning up the school grounds.
We have also launched a paper recycling project linked to the Paper Mill in Apsley.
